WEST KUTAI – Access to specialist healthcare remains a significant challenge in Indonesia’s remote, border, and outermost regions (known as DTPK). Addressing this gap, dr. Dewi Sartika, Sp.BS, an alumna of the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Diponegoro, is serving as a neurosurgeon at Harapan Insan Sendawar Regional Hospital in West Kutai, East Kalimantan, bringing much-needed neurosurgical services closer to local communities.
In areas where medical infrastructure is limited and geographical barriers persist, dr. Dewi’s presence marks a critical milestone in healthcare delivery. She is among the few female neurosurgeons in Indonesia who have chosen to practice in underserved regions, enabling patients to receive treatment locally without traveling long distances to major cities.

As a neurosurgeon, she manages a wide range of complex cases, including head injuries, hemorrhagic stroke, hydrocephalus, brain tumors, and spinal disorders. Her work demands precision, rapid decision-making, and strong mental resilience—qualities essential in high-risk surgical environments.
dr. Dewi credits her professional journey to the role of Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Diponegoro in shaping both her clinical competence and sense of service. According to her, the values instilled during her medical education played a decisive role in her career choice.
“Every lecturer at FK Undip emphasized that many regions in Indonesia still lack proper healthcare services. That is where we, as doctors, are truly needed,” she said in an interview on March 11, 2026.

In addition to fostering a strong sense of service, the clinical training and residency program at FK Undip equipped her to work effectively under limited conditions. Extensive exposure to diverse and complex cases at teaching hospitals, including Central General Hospital Dr. Kariadi, helped sharpen her clinical instincts and decision-making skills.
“When supporting facilities are limited, I rely on thorough history-taking and physical examination skills that were rigorously taught during my training. The ability to think tactically and make decisions under pressure is one of the most valuable lessons from my residency,” she explained.
Her presence in West Kutai not only expands access to specialized healthcare but also demonstrates that quality medical services can be delivered beyond urban centers. It highlights the capacity of FK Undip graduates to contribute meaningfully, not only in major hospitals but also in regions where healthcare services are most needed.
Beyond her clinical contributions, dr. Dewi’s journey serves as an inspiration, particularly for young women, showing that there are no boundaries in pursuing a career in medicine—even in highly demanding fields such as neurosurgery.

In her message to current medical students, she emphasized the importance of integrity and empathy.
“A medical degree is not just a profession, but a responsibility. Do not only pursue academic excellence—cultivate empathy and humility. Be proud to be part of the Diponegoro community, known for its resilience and integrity,” she said.
dr. Dewi Sartika’s story reflects the broader role of Universitas Diponegoro’s Faculty of Medicine in nurturing not only clinically competent physicians, but also professionals who are committed to service, capable of delivering quality healthcare, and making a tangible impact across Indonesia.
