Inauguration of FK Undip Professor, Prof. Yan Wisnu Highlights the Issue of Early-Onset Breast Cancer

SEMARANG – The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Diponegoro (FK Undip), Prof. Dr. dr. Yan Wisnu Prajoko, M.Kes., Sp.B., Subsp.Onk(K), was officially inaugurated as Professor in Surgical Oncology during the Open Session of the Academic Senate of Universitas Diponegoro. The ceremony was held at Prof. Sudarto Building, Undip Tembalang Campus, on Monday (January 26, 2026).

In his inaugural speech entitled “Early-Onset Breast Cancer in the Indonesian Population: Strategies for Reducing Incidence and Comprehensive Management Based on Specific Genetic Profiling,” Prof. Yan Wisnu underscored early-onset breast cancer as a serious national health challenge with far-reaching clinical, social, economic, and human resource development implications.

Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Diponegoro (FK Undip), Prof. Dr. dr. Yan Wisnu Prajoko M.Kes, SpB, SubSp Onk(K) was officially inaugurated as Professor in an open senate meeting held at the Prof. Sudarto Building, Undip on Monday (26/01/2026).

He explained that globally, breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women, with more than 2.3 million new cases reported annually. In Indonesia, based on GLOBOCAN 2022 data, breast cancer ranks first with an incidence rate of 41.8 per 100,000 population, and approximately 21 percent of cases occur in the 35–39 age group. This condition is particularly concerning, as early-onset breast cancer tends to exhibit more aggressive biological characteristics, higher recurrence rates, and greater mortality compared to cases in older age groups.

Through his address, Prof. Yan Wisnu emphasized the importance of a comprehensive and precision-based approach to managing early-onset breast cancer, ranging from strengthening early detection and reducing incidence to implementing integrated multimodal treatment strategies. Such approaches include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, endocrine therapy, and targeted therapy planned through multidisciplinary collaboration, while also addressing quality of life, fertility counseling, and psychosocial support for patients.

He further highlighted the role of genetic profiling—particularly the detection of PIK3CA mutations—as a foundation for more accurate and personalized therapeutic decision-making. According to him, understanding the biological and genetic characteristics of the Indonesian population is essential to avoid a “one-size-fits-all” approach in breast cancer treatment, thereby improving therapeutic effectiveness while minimizing unnecessary toxicity.

“Early-onset breast cancer is not merely an individual health issue, but one that affects the resilience of our nation’s human resources. Therefore, its management strategies must be positioned as a long-term investment in health, productivity, and the quality of future generations,” Prof. Yan Wisnu asserted in his inaugural speech.

Meanwhile, in his remarks, the Rector of Universitas Diponegoro, Prof. Suharnomo, S.E., M.Si, stated that Prof. Yan has played a pivotal role in bringing the Faculty of Medicine of Undip into the QS World University Rankings (WUR) by Subject 2025 in Medicine.

“Prof. Yan has led the Faculty of Medicine to become part of a World Class University,” he said.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by the leadership of Universitas Diponegoro, members of the Academic Senate, the Board of Professors, representatives of ministries and state institutions, leaders of teaching hospitals, members of the FK Undip academic community, and other invited guests. This inauguration further affirms Prof. Yan Wisnu’s contribution to the advancement of surgical oncology, particularly in promoting evidence-based, nationally relevant, and human-centered approaches to breast cancer management.

Through this professorial inauguration, FK Undip reaffirms its commitment to advancing medical science that is excellent, innovative, and impactful in improving the health status of the Indonesian population.(*)
