SOUTHWEST PAPUA – The Faculty of Medicine Universitas Diponegoro (FK Undip) continues its commitment to producing competent health professionals with a strong spirit of service. This commitment is reflected in dr. Jan Pieter E. A. Kambu, Sp.OG, Subsp. FER, an alumnus of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist and Subspecialist programs at Universitas Diponegoro. Dr. Jan Pieter currently serves as Head of the Health Office, Population Control, and Family Planning Agency of Southwest Papua Province, carrying a major mission to reduce the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) and improve equitable access to healthcare facilities in eastern Indonesia.
After completing his Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist education, dr. Jan Pieter continued his studies in the Subspecialist Program of Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility at the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Diponegoro. This advanced education equipped him with specific expertise in managing complex reproductive and hormonal disorders. Beyond medical knowledge, the program also strengthened his skills in evidence-based analysis and problem-solving management. This systematic approach later became an important asset in managing health sector governance.
As Head of the Health Office, Population Control, and Family Planning Agency of Southwest Papua Province, dr. Jan Pieter holds a strategic responsibility in developing the healthcare system in the newly established province. The challenges include geographical conditions, equitable distribution of healthcare facilities, and meeting the quantity and quality needs of medical personnel in remote areas.
His background as an obstetrics and gynecology specialist provides a strategic advantage. He has a direct understanding of the root causes of health issues in the field, particularly those related to the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR). This practical understanding enables him to formulate effective priority programs, such as strengthening primary healthcare services at community health centers (Puskesmas) and improving the capacity of regional referral hospitals.
As Head of the Health Office, Population Control, and Family Planning Agency of Southwest Papua Province, dr. Jan Pieter Kambu has moved quickly to strengthen healthcare services in the Sorong region and surrounding areas. One of his initiatives was organizing a risk management workshop for Puskesmas across all regencies and cities in Southwest Papua.
“Risk management implementation is very important for Puskesmas as the frontline of public healthcare services. The goal is also to encourage Puskesmas to implement risk management according to established standards,” he said to FK Undip on Thursday (18/6/2026).
dr. Jan Pieter explained that risk management is related to the ability of healthcare workers to detect potential hazards from medicines, medical devices, and medical materials at an early stage to prevent risks for both patients and healthcare workers.
Addressing young doctors and medical students, dr. Jan Pieter emphasized the importance of mental and professional readiness to serve communities across Indonesia. He reminded them that the essence of the medical profession is equal and widespread service.
“Equitable healthcare services can only be achieved in reality if healthcare experts, especially the younger generation, are willing to return and help build healthcare foundations in developing regions, particularly newly emerging areas.
