Students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Diponegoro Develop Innovation from MBG Waste, Win Multiple Awards at National Wellness Festival 2026

MALANG – Students from the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Diponegoro  once again achieved national recognition at the Nusantara Writing Festival 5, held in Malang, East Java, on April 18–19, 2026. The team secured a Silver Medal and the Favorite Poster Award through their innovation titled SAWIT (Sustainable Aroma-Based Wellness Innovation for Transportation).

The team, consisting of Naufa Nufail, Abdullah Azzam, Ainnaya Alifia Putri, and Lavirda Pricilvia, introduced an innovative helmet-cleaning product made from eco-enzyme derived from orange peel waste generated by the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG).

The innovation not only helps maintain helmet hygiene, but also utilizes olfactory stimulation to improve the alertness of online motorcycle taxi drivers while riding.

Team representative Naufa Nufail explained that the idea was inspired by the high risk of traffic accidents among motorcycle riders, particularly online motorcycle taxi drivers, caused by fatigue and distraction.

“Helmets worn for long hours can become damp and produce unpleasant odors that may reduce concentration. Through SAWIT, we integrate health and environmental aspects to create a practical solution,” he told the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Diponegoro  on Monday (April 27, 2026).

He added that compounds such as limonene and menthol in the SAWIT formulation can stimulate the nervous system, helping improve attention and alertness.

The innovation’s strength lies in its novelty, combining issues of health, transportation safety, and waste utilization. Beyond presenting a concept, the team also developed a product prototype to demonstrate its practical feasibility.

“We want to show that this innovation goes beyond an idea and has real potential for implementation in society,” Naufa added.

The achievement was supported by supervising lecturers Prof. Dr. Diana Nur Afifah and dr. Fanti Saktini, as well as the strong academic ecosystem fostered by the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Diponegoro . Through evidence-based approaches, networking facilities, and interdisciplinary collaboration, students are encouraged to develop innovations that are not only scientific, but also practical and sustainable.

“FK Undip has strongly supported us from the idea development stage to implementation. We were facilitated in building partnerships so the innovation could be tested directly in real settings,” Naufa said.

He also expressed pride in representing the Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University in an interdisciplinary competition.

Moving forward, the team plans to further develop the innovation through scientific validation and product commercialization for the wider community, particularly online motorcycle taxi driver communities in Semarang. The achievement further highlights the commitment of the Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University to producing students who not only excel academically, but are also capable of creating impactful innovations for society.
