Samboja, Kutai Kartanegara, 24 June 2026 – The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Diponegoro (FK Undip) carried out a site visit to RSUD Abadi Samboja as part of the evaluation and quality assurance process prior to the placement of Specialist Medical Education Program (PPDS) trainees in the independent deployment phase. The activity aimed to ensure the hospital’s readiness to support specialist medical training while also safeguarding both student safety and patient safety.
The visit was conducted by the Vice Dean for Resources, the Head of the Department of Medical Specialties, and the Head of the Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy Study Program at FK Undip. It included a direct assessment of hospital service systems, clinical supervision readiness, human resources, supporting facilities and infrastructure, as well as the governance of medical education within the healthcare setting. This stage is a mandatory requirement before PPDS trainees are assigned to partner hospitals for their independent clinical training phase.
With the growing demand for healthcare services in the Samboja region and the capital city buffer zone, anesthesiology and intensive care services play a crucial role in hospital operations. Nearly all surgical procedures, emergency care services, intensive care management of critically ill patients, and invasive medical procedures require anesthesiology support. The availability of adequate anesthesiology services not only ensures the smooth execution of surgical procedures but also directly impacts patient safety before, during, and after medical interventions.
RSUD Abadi Samboja serves a broad catchment area, making the strengthening of anesthesiology and intensive care services a strategic priority. The presence of FK Undip Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy residents in the independent deployment phase is expected to enhance perioperative care services, expand the hospital’s capacity in handling emergency and critical care cases, and support the continuity of surgical services that are essential for the community. With this support, more cases can be managed locally at RSUD Abadi Samboja without the need for referrals to hospitals in Balikpapan or Samarinda, enabling patients to receive faster and more timely treatment.

The Head of the Department of Medical Specialties, Dr. I Edward Kurnia Setiawan L., M.M., M.H.Kes., Sp.PK(K)., M.Si.Med., stated that the placement of trainees in the independent phase is only conducted in hospitals that meet the faculty’s established standards for education and healthcare services.
“Patient safety and trainee safety are the top priorities. Therefore, FK Undip conducts a comprehensive evaluation of hospital readiness, including supervision aspects, facilities, service governance, and the hospital’s commitment to supporting specialist medical education. The results of the site visit indicate that RSUD Abadi Samboja has strong potential and good readiness to support both the learning process and healthcare services for the community,” he said.
At this stage, FK Undip, through the Vice Dean, has established cooperation with RSUD Abadi Samboja to place trainees from the Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy Study Program who have entered the final phase of their education. Residents in the independent phase are trainees who have completed most of their core competencies and are considered capable of providing more independent clinical services under the supervision of specialist physicians at partner hospitals.
The Vice Dean for Resources of the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Diponegoro, Dr. Nuryanto, S.Gz., M.Gizi., stated that the deployment program is a concrete form of FK Undip’s contribution to supporting equitable healthcare distribution and meeting the need for specialist doctors in regional areas.
“As a medical education institution, FK Undip has the responsibility to produce competent specialist doctors while also contributing to improving public access to healthcare services. The placement of residents in the independent phase is part of the implementation of the Tridharma of Higher Education and an effort to support equitable healthcare services, particularly in areas with high demand for specialist care,” he said.
The Director of RSUD Abadi Samboja welcomed the collaboration and expressed hope that synergy with FK Undip would further improve hospital service quality.
“The presence of residents in the independent phase will bring significant benefits to the hospital and the community. With our available facilities and proper supervision, we are optimistic that healthcare services will continue to improve and that the community will have easier access to specialist care without having to travel long distances for treatment,” he said.
Through this collaboration, FK Undip and RSUD Abadi Samboja are committed to jointly building a high-quality medical education ecosystem while strengthening healthcare services in the region. This collaboration not only supports the equitable distribution of specialist doctors and improves healthcare quality for the people of Kutai Kartanegara and the buffer zone of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN), but also contributes to the achievement of Higher Education Key Performance Indicators (IKU), particularly in off-campus learning, strategic partnerships, and tangible contributions of universities in addressing societal challenges. Through the deployment of residents in partner hospitals, FK Undip continues to strengthen its role as a medical education institution that produces competent specialists while delivering direct impact on improving public health in Indonesia.
