Inspirational Story: Child of a Herbal Drink Seller Earns Medical Degree from the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Diponegoro

SEMARANG – Financial limitations did not stand in the way of earning a medical degree. This was proven by dr. Evangga Yudha Perdana, a newly graduated doctor from The Faculty of Medicine Universitas Diponegoro (FK Undip). Evangga successfully completed his medical professional education with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.78, graduating with distinction during the April 2026 graduation period.

His achievement marks an extraordinary milestone, considering he comes from a modest family with no medical background and has become the first doctor in his family. For Evangga, this accomplishment is the result of perseverance, his parents’ remarkable vision, and the highly supportive academic environment at The Faculty of Medicine Universitas Diponegoro (FK Undip).

“Becoming a doctor is a calling to serve others. Because I grew up in an ordinary family, I truly understand how difficult it can be for people from lower-income communities when dealing with healthcare procedures. My greatest motivation is to be there to help them while also uplifting my parents’ lives,” he said on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

Evangga’s journey toward becoming a doctor was filled with emotional challenges and sacrifice. His parents come from a humble educational background, having completed only elementary and secondary school. To support their family, they continued his grandmother’s small business as traditional herbal drink sellers, traveling from place to place to sell *jamu*. Despite the uncertainty of income from selling herbal drinks in today’s changing times, Evangga’s parents held a deeply visionary belief in the importance of education.

They were willing to do whatever it took—including selling family land—to ensure that their eldest son could pursue the highest level of education.

“My parents may not have had higher education or financial wealth, but they have always done everything they could to help their children succeed. Their extraordinary sacrifices have always been my source of strength whenever I feel exhausted from studying,” he said emotionally.

During his studies at The Faculty of Medicine Universitas Diponegoro, The newly graduated doctor—who also participated in a 10-week student exchange program overseas in early 2025—said he was greatly supported by the university’s learning environment. According to him, The Faculty of Medicine Universitas Diponegoro has successfully fostered an academic culture that prioritizes collaboration over unhealthy competition.

He explained that there is no rigid seniority culture or discrimination based on social background within the faculty. Instead, students are encouraged to learn together through discussion groups and clinical practice sessions. This supportive atmosphere made the intense demands of medical education feel much more manageable.

“The environment at FK Undip is warm and inclusive. We go through the journey together and help one another in groups, so there is no overwhelming sense of discrimination. This supportive relationship allows us to focus on giving our best,” said dr. Evangga Yudha Perdana, who also has a strong interest in technology and neo-classical instrumental music.

Despite graduating with an impressive GPA of 3.78, Evangga remains grounded. For him, grades on paper are only numbers, while the real test begins when a doctor directly serves patients in the community.

After officially earning his medical degree, he plans to dedicate himself to serving the wider community through healthcare facilities affiliated with BPJS while gaining professional experience and saving toward his dream of pursuing further study abroad in the future. He said he feels more driven by humanitarian values than by material gain.

Through this achievement, The Faculty of Medicine Universitas Diponegoro (FK Undip) once again reaffirms its role in producing medical professionals who are not only academically excellent, but also equipped with deep empathy and strong mental resilience in serving the nation.

As a closing message, Evangga shared words of encouragement for fellow medical students who are still continuing their journey and reminded them never to give up despite the challenges.

“Medical education demands time, energy, and mental strength. But always remember, behind every hardship there is ease. Whenever you feel tired, remember the faces of your loved ones waiting for your good news. We are fighting not only for ourselves, but for the well-being of many others. Now is the time for us to repay their sacrifices and make them proud,” he concluded. (Public Relations of FK Undip / Saradita / Erman)
