Semarang – A student of the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Diponegoro (FK Undip) has achieved another remarkable accomplishment. Debora Agatha Chandra Elloinia, a 2024 student of the Medical Study Program, won a Bronze Medal at the Mandalika Essay Competition (MEC 8), organized by Universitas Mataram in Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara Province, on May 16, 2026.
The award was earned through her essay entitled “LACTUPATCH: A Patch Innovation Utilizing Biopolymers and Nanocellulose from Ulva lactuca through Biosynthesis, Hydrolysis, Acid Hydrolysis, and Ultrasonication Processes to Develop Sustainable Antimicrobial Materials.”
LACTUPATCH is an antimicrobial patch concept made from sea lettuce (Ulva lactuca), developed using biopolymer and nanocellulose technologies as an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative for healthcare materials. Through the project, Debora transformed sea lettuce into biopolymers and nanocellulose using biosynthesis, acid hydrolysis, and ultrasonication processes to create a material with the potential to function as an effective antimicrobial patch while remaining biodegradable and naturally decomposable.
The innovation offers a solution to the growing demand for medical materials that not only support healthcare needs but also address environmental sustainability concerns. In addition to its potential antimicrobial properties that may help prevent the growth of microorganisms in wounds, the developed material could reduce reliance on synthetic substances that are difficult to decompose and contribute to environmental waste.
Through this concept, Debora demonstrated how marine biological resources can be transformed into innovative healthcare products with added value. The multidisciplinary approach, integrating medical science, materials technology, and environmental sustainability, became one of the key strengths that enabled the project to earn recognition at the national level.
Participation in the Mandalika Essay Competition reflects the contribution of FK Undip’s 2024 Medical Study Program students to the development of research and innovation aimed at addressing future challenges. The competition also serves as a platform for students to strengthen their critical thinking, research, and problem-solving skills through science-based solutions that can generate tangible benefits for society.
Debora’s achievement further reinforces the strong presence of Faculty of Medicine Universitas Diponegoro students in various national scientific competitions. The accomplishment is expected to inspire other students to continue pursuing innovation, conducting impactful research, and contributing to the advancement of science and public welfare, while enhancing the reputation of FK Undip at both national and international levels.
