Semarang, February 28, 2025 – Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University (FK Undip) once again welcomed a delegation from the Department of Community-based Family Medicine, Tottori University, Japan, in order to exchange knowledge and experience, especially regarding the primary care system, community medicine and medical education. This second visit, which is a continuation of the 2024 agenda, confirms the commitment of both parties to improve the quality of medical education and health services.
Agenda and Series of Activities
The Tottori University team’s visit was held on February 22-28, 2025. The team was led by Prof. Shinichi Taniguchi, MD, Ph.D, accompanied by Dr. Daisuke Son, along with 6 students. On this occasion, 3 students from Kagoshima University also joined. This activity was opened with a visit to the Gayamsari Health Center and the Graha Shifa Primary Clinic on Monday, February 24, 2025, as an effort to see firsthand the implementation of the primary care system in Indonesia. Activities included visits to integrated health posts and home visits to patients at the Graha Shifa clinic.
On Tuesday, February 25, 2025, FK Undip held a visiting lectures session which was the main agenda, with the topic “Family and Community Medicine in Japan and Indonesia.” This session presented presentations on:
- Overview of Education about Community Medicine in Tottori University, Japan by Prof. Shinichi Taniguchi
- Primary Care in Japan and Our Department’s Initiatives by Dr Daisuke Son
- Interprofessional Education in Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University by Prof. Dr. Tri Nur Kristina
- Social Determinant Health in Indonesia by Dr. Dea Amarilisa Adespin
The session took place from 09.30–12.00 WIB in Building B, FK Undip, presenting an in-depth discussion on the comparison of education systems and health services between the two countries.
After the main session, the activity continued with a campus tour that included class visits, student discussions, and a podcast with the theme “Medical Education in Indonesia and Japan” which will be published through social media and the Undip YouTube channel. On February 26, 2025, the agenda included a visit to Jepara, specifically to the auxiliary health centers at Pakis Aji Health Center and Mlonggo Health Center. The activities involved examining TB and leprosy patients at the auxiliary health centers, followed by a visit to Pakis Aji Health Center to participate in health cadre training. The day concluded with a visit to Mlonggo Health Center, where the group observed health facilities and attended a presentation on field activities conducted by FK Undip students. On February 27, 2025, the focus shifted to visits to health institutions, including Diponegoro National Hospital (RSND), Diponegoro Clinic, and JEC Clinic. These visits were part of a field study to observe the implementation of the health system firsthand. Additionally, the Japanese team had the opportunity to conduct home visits to families in the vicinity of the health facilities. This activity, which is part of the Puskesmas service and the Interprofessional Education program of the Undip Faculty of Medicine, allowed them to engage with students and residents in discussions about health education.
Conclusion
This visit not only strengthens the academic relationship between FK Undip and Tottori University but also opens up space for the exchange of ideas and best practices in medical education and primary health care. The agenda of this second visit emphasizes that international collaboration is one of the important strategies in improving the quality of education and health. FK Undip hopes that the collaboration established with Tottori University can pave the way for similar initiatives in the future, including collaboration with other health institutions.
