SEMARANG – The Faculty of Medicine Universitas Diponegoro (FK Undip) officially hosted the Basic Surgical Skill (BSS) 1 Training for the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program on Friday, May 22, 2026. Organized by Kolegium Obstetri dan Ginekologi Indonesia, the program was held for the Joglosemar region, covering medical education centers from three major universities: Universitas Diponegoro (Undip), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), and Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS). The intensive training took place over three days, from May 22 to 24, 2026.
Carrying the theme “Every Great Obstetrician Starts with the Basics,” the training was designed to equip first-semester participants of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program with fundamental surgical competencies. These skills serve as essential preparation before they begin directly handling patients in teaching hospitals.
The series of activities began with a faculty meeting on Thursday evening, May 21, at Grand Candi Hotel Semarang, attended by the training director, instructors, and all participants. Meanwhile, the main training sessions were held at the Multipurpose Hall of the Mayjen dr. R. Soewondo Sastrodiprojo Building, The Faculty of Medicine Universitas Diponegoro (FK Undip).

Chair of the Independent College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Prof. Dr. dr. Yudi Mulyana Hidayat, emphasized that the training is part of an ongoing commitment to maintaining the quality and integrity of specialist medical education in Indonesia. According to him, modern medical education must prioritize a humanistic approach centered on patient safety. Prof. Yudi also explained that the regional-based training system is intentionally implemented for efficiency, allowing resident doctors from the Joglosemar area to participate without having to travel far from their respective educational centers.
“Residents must first learn and become proficient using models, mannequins, and simulations before handling patients directly. Before performing surgery, suturing, or even holding surgical instruments, everything is taught from the most fundamental level,” said Prof. Yudi.

Meanwhile, the chair of the organizing committee, dr. Ahmad Bukhoeri, explained that the program was conducted over three days. On the first day, participants attended sessions focused on aligning perspectives, mapping expectations, and identifying concerns, facilitated by dr. Ahmad Bukhoeri, followed by an overview of the training delivered by Prof. Yudi.
The materials covered in the training were highly comprehensive. Participants received theoretical instruction on topics including ethics in obstetric and gynecologic surgery, principles of infection prevention, nosocomial infections, proper hand hygiene techniques, and sterile procedures for wearing surgical gloves and gowns. Equally important, they were introduced to the characteristics and proper use of surgical needles and sutures.
To complement the theoretical sessions, the largest portion of the program was dedicated to practical workshops. Residents received hands-on training in the use of essential surgical instruments such as scalpels, forceps, clamps, scissors, and needle holders. They were also trained to master various surgical knot techniques—including square knots, surgeon’s knots, and slip knots—as well as elliptical and linear incision techniques, and multiple wound closure methods, including interrupted, continuous, vertical and horizontal mattress, and subcuticular suturing.
The scientific program was further enriched by a presentation on the latest developments in medical technology delivered by PT Dexa Medica.

“The core purpose of this training is to provide participants with an understanding of basic operative techniques, so they are well-prepared and equipped with the necessary skills before advancing to more complex clinical practice,” said dr. Ahmad Bukhoeri, Sp.O.G.
At the end of the opening session, Prof. Dr. dr. Yudi Mulyana Hidayat, Sp.O.G., Subsp.Onk., D.MAS once again emphasized that all training materials ultimately lead to one core principle: patient safety. The skills developed throughout the three-day program are expected to be applied consistently in daily clinical practice in hospitals, under the close supervision of consultants at each respective training center.
Through the rigorous standardization implemented in BSS 1, residents from the Joglosemar region are expected to become specialist doctors who are not only technically proficient in surgical procedures, but also uphold strong professional integrity in ensuring patient safety as they advance into the next stage of clinical education.
